Top Ten Classroom Behaviours

This list contains ten of the most prevalent classroom behaviours that need to be addressed in a classroom management plan. The class composed a list of strategies that can be used in order to manage the behaviours. These top ten classroom management issues were comprised by a group of Hope College students for elementary classrooms.

Elementary:
- Tattle tale
o mailbox out in the hallway/ outside the door--put them on different colored sticky notes(confusion:blue, anger: pink, etc.) and the teacher can read them later. Emergency: go to teacher
o show tattle tale video and then talk as a class about how to avoid tattling in the classroom
o Whole class discussion. Honesty is the best policy. Three versions of one story, who is the teacher supposed to believe.
- Blurting out answers
o whole class answer, remind/reinforce rules. when shouting does occur react saying, ‘I heard a really good answer but someone shouted out’
o Gestures for different needs. 1-finger for a comment 2-fingers for a question and 5-fingers for help
o Popsicle sticks can be used so that the students are waiting to be called on
- Unrelated stories
o Mailbox/ journal
o Consequences for being off task
o Remind children that at the end of the day we can share stories
o Twitter notice/class board
- Inattentiveness
o Brain gym
o Take a break time during the day
o Fun fact of the day (unrelated to the lesson but a good way to take a break)
- Crying
o Cool down station in the classroom, books and bean bags in the area
o Discuss reasons for why they are crying 1 to 1. Strategies on how to not get upset over school work if that is the issue.
o Positive reinforcement. ‘Well done for not crying’
- Claiming unfairness
o Reinforce class rules and respecting our differences.
o Help/Supporting each other
o Circle time - Story and discuss so children can empathise.
- Stealing
o Role Playing
o Reinforce class rules.
o Circle time/Story and discuss feelings and thoughts so children can empathise.
- Wondering about the classroom
o Ask, “Why are you walking around the room?” Then ask what they should do to help the situation without distracting others.
o Make it not a bad thing for the students to be walking around the room.
- Name calling
o Role Playing
o Reinforce rules
o Discuss and get child to initiate consequence (often harder on themselves)
o Circle time/story. Discuss how it makes people feel - empathise.
- Bullying
o Role Playing
o Reinforce class rules.
o For every mean/negative thing you say about someone, you need to say one positive comment.
o Circle time/Story. Discuss how it makes people feel – empathise.
